The Hungarian low-cost airline, Wizz Air, is suspending twenty-one of its Romanian flights, economedia.ro reports.
The airline confirmed to economedia.ro that it will temporarily suspend some of its flights
due to the inspection of the engines of the American engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, due in the coming months.
The measure will affect six Romanian airports: Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), Timisoara (Temesvár), Târgu-Mures (Marosvásárhely), Craiova, and Iasi (Jászvásár). Some flights will be stopped at the end of March and in April, and a number of seasonal flights will not resume this summer. Last year, Wizz Air was the leading airline in Romania, with six bases. According to Wizz Air, its market share in the country is 57 percent.
As reported by Airportal.hu, at the end of December, 13 aircraft were out of service due to Pratt & Whitney engine problems, for which the company received a penalty from the manufacturer, but by January 24, the number of grounded aircraft had increased to 33, and is expected to increase to 40 by the end of March.
Previously, the airline had estimated the number of aircraft grounded by the end of March at 45, almost a quarter of the fleet. The average repair time for grounded aircraft is 300 calendar days, but the airline is trying to avoid the impact on the network and no base closures are expected.
In the next financial year, 30 new A321neo aircraft will be added to the fleet. In addition, the lease contracts of 13 existing aircraft have been extended and
the utilization of the operational fleet and the number of daily flights will increase.
