Lanterns made by artists, a carnival, and the 116-year-old carousel await the public in the evenings at the Budapest Zoo’s Spring Lantern Magic event between March 18 and April 21.
Hundreds of lanterns made by Chinese artists will be on display at the Spring Lantern Magic event. Most of them depict animals, plants, and mythological creatures, but also motifs typical of Chinese civilization. There will also be giant dragons and ancient Egyptian lanterns depicting pyramids and sphinxes.
In addition, visitors will also be able to see a range of animal species at the event, such as Hungarian Spotted cattle, mangalica (Hungarian breed of domestic pig), Gyimes racka and Cameroon sheep, pygmy goats, Hucul ponies, alpacas, camels, and newborn goat kids. During the Spring Lantern Festival, the Shark School, with sharks, rays, various types of swordfish and other marine animals, will also be open until 9.30 p.m.
Every evening, the Schäftner carousel, which has been in operation since 1908, two other nostalgic carousels, the mini ferris wheel (Törpe Kerék), and the popular miniature railway are open, which children can also enjoy.
Visitors can approach the event site through the gate next to the historic carousel. The entrance opens at 6:00 p.m. in March and 6:30 p.m. in April, and you can stay on site until 10.00 p.m. More information is available on the zoo’s website.
