The Hungarian government has set up a new company called Hungarian Wine Marketing Agency (Magyar Bormarketing Ügynökség Zrt.), as reported by Világgazdaság, a Hungarian economic website. The main activity of the new body will be the organization of conferences and trade shows.
The government is known to want to put more emphasis on wine marketing, which could be a profitable investment, as Hungary boasts a number of excellent wine regions and award-winning wines. The need for wine marketing is reflected in the creation of the position of Government Commissioner for Wine Marketing, currently held by winemaker Pál Rókusfalvy, owner of Rókusfalvy Wine Estate in the Etyek wine region.
In an interview with Index last year, he said that
wine marketing can only be put in its place if it is managed at the highest level.
“We need someone to pull it all out by the hair and put it into a coordinate system,” Pál Rókusfalvy said. He also pointed out that the area has been supervised by a number of bodies over the years, but no one has yet taken on the coordinating role.
The newly created agency is likely to take on this task. Its ownership will be exercised by the Prime Minister’s Office, which will now be responsible for seven state-owned companies.
