North Rhine-Westphalia is an important investment and foreign trade partner for Hungary, and strengthening our economic relations with one of the most dynamically developing German states is in our mutual interest, said Judit Varga, Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the National Assembly.
The politician said in Düsseldorf that during the bilateral meetings, she had held talks with the Chair of the EU Affairs Committee of the German parliament, Stefan Engstfeld, as well as with other members of the committee and officials of the parliament who are committed to German-Hungarian relations. Judit Varga noted that the preservation and further development of both German-Hungarian and North Rhine-Westphalian-Hungarian economic cooperation is of mutual interest and can therefore be included in the priorities of the Hungarian EU Presidency in 2024.
She pointed out that in her discussions with economic operators in the federal state, she had found that companies wishing to invest in Hungary or already operating there had a positive opinion of the country.
We have discussed practical issues where the European Union could do better and set more rational objectives for industry that are feasible and not ideological,”
she said.
For years we’ve been seeing the symptoms of crises in the EU. It’s clear that it must be saved but we must talk about the problems & the proposals for solutions as that’s the 1st step to fix something out of order. That’s what I talked about at my 1st meeting in Düsseldorf. pic.twitter.com/Ui8U3x1Feu

The politician also discussed the general political and economic situation in the EU, the priorities of the Hungarian presidency and the stakes of the EP elections, and drew the attention of his partners to the fact that during the Hungarian EU presidency, Hungary will make important proposals to strengthen Europe’s security and competitiveness, and will also address the demographic challenges.
As a political message to her partners, she said that she believes that Europe is experiencing signs of crisis, one example of which is the farmers’ protests, where German and French citizens see that the Brussels elite is not dealing with their problems, and that it is definitely worthwhile to put this right during the EP elections.
The talks also touched on media reports about Hungary’s voting rights being taken away, and Varga stressed that “blackmailers cry blackmail,” as Hungary has a guaranteed right under the EU treaties to have a different opinion on certain issues, such as foreign policy.
If we do not represent the majority position, they threaten to cut off funds and then take away our voting rights, and this also means a kind of cancel culture in the Brussels administration, and we would like to change this, too,”
she said.
Speaking about the stakes of the EP elections, the government politician stressed that the election will be a contest between returning Europe to the path of rationality and restoring a culture of consensus in decision-making, or the “well-tried method of the EU institutions, the witch-hunt,” the rule of law procedures, and the blackmail of countries with ideological differences.
