German Brands Dominate the Domestic Used Car Market

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.31.

Experts from Használtautó.hu, a portal that covers the entire Hungarian market in terms of number of ads and visits, looked at which brands from which countries have been the most popular in Hungary since the first half of 2022. The dominance of German used cars is clear, even if they showed a slight slowdown in the period under review, Világgazdaság writes.

Based on the first half of 2022, 2023 and 2024, Használtautó.hu analyzed the supply available on the portal to see what picture is drawn by the most popular car brands in terms of origin. Looking at the top 10 brands in the first half of this year, the order is as follows:

  1. Volkswagen,
  2. Opel,
  3. Ford,
  4. BMW,
  5. Mercedes-Benz,
  6. Audi,
  7. Toyota,
  8. Skoda,
  9. Suzuki,
  10. Renault

Looking at the country of origin of the more than 40 brands on the supply list, the German dominance is striking: the distribution was 40.1% in 2022, 38.5% in 2023 and 38.3% in 2024.

It is also interesting to note that European brands lead by continent with 63.4%, followed by Asia with 26% and North America with 10.6%.

“In our country, for instance, the number of enquiries about BYD and MG has more than tripled since last year. Meanwhile, we have to keep a watchful eye on Stellantis. Last week, it was revealed that the car giant might even discontinue certain brands due to the 48 percent year-on-year net profit decline, that could have a negative impact on the unit sales of Italian, French and American brands,” said András Horváth, car market expert at Használtautó.hu.

Nearly 457,000 cars changed hands on the domestic used car market in the first half of the year, up 12.4 percent year-on-year.

There is a significant chance of breaking the annual peak of 825,000 reached in 2022. Domestic car ownership continues to grow: at the end of last year, it was close to 4.2 million, more than 14 percent higher than five years earlier.

Fact

As Hungary Today reported last month, the Hungarian used car market is booming on an unprecedented level. Demand is shifting towards older and cheaper vehicles, with 37 percent of sales involving cars at least 20 years old and more than 60 percent at least 15 years old.

Concerning the new car market, the year 2024 has started well, with roughly 7,000 more cars registered in the first four months compared to 2023. This year, the supply chain is no longer affected by the shortage of semi-conductors, and as a result, delivery times are back to normal. There was also a particularly significant increase in the number of electric vehicles, with nearly 50 percent more e-cars on the road compared to the same period last year.
