Foreign Minister Attends Economic Forum in St. Petersburg

Hungary Today 2023.06.14.

Among other high-ranking guests, Austrian former Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl has also attended the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg (SPIEF) which focuses on the question of how Russia’s position and access abroad can be managed. According to the published program, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is also among those attending the gathering, Austrian newspaper Kurier reported.

The forum, from which the Western media has been completely excluded for the first time in history, begins on Wednesday. Szijjártó has announced one appearance at which he is to discuss energy issues with Gazprom’s top manager Aleksandr Djukow. The chairman of the Russian gas company Novatek Leonid Mikhelson, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexandr Nowak, the Venezuelan Oil Minister Pedro Tellechea, and Kneissl, will also attend.

Between 2005 and 2010, Kneissl was an independent local councilor on the list of The Austrian People’s Party. As an expert in international law, history of the Middle East and the energy market, Kneissl taught at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, the European Business School in Rheingau, and was a guest lecturer at several universities. She was nominated by FPÖ as a non-party member for the post of Foreign Minister of Austria in the government of Sebastian Kurz. In 2019, after a vote of no confidence ended the First Kurz government, she left political office. She was later appointed by the Russian Government to the Board of Directors of the state gas company Rosneft, a position she held until the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to text messages she sent to a Washington Post reporter, she had emigrated from Austria because of “death threats.”

In the past, top representatives from the EU had always taken part in the event, including then Chancellor Christian Kern (SPÖ) in 2017, and Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP), who was connected via video in 2021.

As in the past, numerous high-ranking representatives from the post-Soviet space will again take part in the event in 2023. Cuban Tourism Minister Juan Carlos García Granda, Kyrgyzstan Deputy Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaljiev, United Arab Emirates Minister of Culture Salem Khalid Al Qasimi, Nicaraguan Finance Minister Ivan Adolfo Acosta Montalvan, and Myanmar Foreign Trade Minister Kan Zaw have also been announced as attendees.
