In addition to gastronomic specialities, family programs and concerts will be held as part of the St. Stephen’s Day celebrations on the Hungarian Street of Flavors between August 19-21 in front of the Várkert Bazaar on the Buda Lower Quay, where this year the main focus will be on cereals, but you can also taste Hungary’s cake and sugar-free cake, as well as St. Stephen’s Day bread.
Every year Hungarians celebrate August 20th, the national holiday and official state holiday commemorating the foundation of the state and its founder, King Stephen I. The day is also one of the main feasts of the Hungarian Catholic Church in honor of Hungary’s patron saint.
This year, during the celebrations on the Hungarian Street of Flavors, visitors can find tripe with pork knuckle from Bogyiszló, Vojvodina, Roma, and Chango dishes, stuffed cabbage from Satu Mare, mutton stew from Karcag, chipped carp, and many other fish dishes. There will also be lightly fried flatbread, langallo, and stuffed langosh. This year, cabbage soup and poppy seed scones from Upland (Slovakia), pepper soup from Transcarpathia, and homemade doughnuts with plum jam from Nagymuzsaly will be served. A group from the Moldavian Chango village of Pusztina will prepare stuffed grape leaves. One can also try the fish soup from the Southern Danube (Vojvodina) and the Hungarian snuff noodles drizzled with pumpkin seed oil (Dödölle).
Besides spritzers and syrups, Hungarian craft beers, fruit wines, mead, herbal teas, and some typical Hungarian pálinka will be offered.
New this year is the Garden of Handmade Cosmetics, where products made from Hungarian ingredients will be on display.
This year’s program also offers activities for the whole family: a puppet show, road safety games, storytellers, craftsmen, a gastro-talk, concerts, free blood sugar tests, and blood pressure and body analysis tests.
The Hungarian Federation of Bakers has organized a bread competition for the eleventh time, the winning products of which can be tasted here, as well as the “Cheeky Plum Prince,” Hungary’s Cake of the Year 2022, the press release says.
