Fidesz-KDNP Won among First-time Voters in April Elections

Almost half of first-time voters voted for the ruling Fidesz-KDNP party list in the April parliamentary elections, a new poll shows.

A representative survey conducted in May and June by the MCC Youth Research Center (Ifjúságkutató Intézet) – in cooperation with the Social Research Center (Társadalomkutató Kft.), shows that 49 percent of young people aged 18-21 who participated for the first time in the April elections voted for the ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition, and only 22 percent voted for the opposition party alliance.

Eight percent of the first-time voters cast their ballots for the radical right-wing group, Our Homeland. Other small parties were well below the parliamentary threshold (five percent).

According to the statement, the results clearly indicate that the joint opposition list – led by Péter Márki-Zay – failed to appeal to the youngest voters, as the alliance’s support among them did not even reach two-thirds of their final result in the elections, which was 34.4 percent. In contrast, the share of Fidesz-KDNP voters in this age group reached nine-tenths of the result of the ruling parties, which was 52.5 percent.

Our Homeland received 5.9 percent in the elections, so the party performed slightly better in this age group. The satirical, liberal Two-Tailed Dog Party performed similar to the 3.3 percent result they reached in the elections.

The results of this survey contradict the narrative often peddled by the opposition media, that the government parties are only popular among the aging population, while young Hungarians are left-leaning, and reject traditional values in favor of progressive ideas.
