Out of a record number of forty contestants, the Mesés BBQ & Grill Bistro in Balatonlelle (southern shore of the lake) won the Balaton Circle’s Beach Food of the Year competition for the tenth time with their lamb-stuffed grape leaf and cabbage dish, the organizers announced.
According to the press release, the winning dish is minced lamb stuffed in grape leaves fermented with rosemary and green wheat, served on cold cabbage with fermented leeks, homemade raspberry vinegar, and red onion.
In the beach buffet category, the winner was the Oliva Beach Buffet in Alsóörs (northern shore) with pistachio pesto lángos (deep fried bread dough), which not only features toasted pistachios in the basil pesto but also in the dough itself.
This year’s Beach Dessert was a new competition category, with the winner being the “tarhonya” (a Hungarian pasta similar to the Italian orzo) pudding with seasonal fruit from Tiki Beach Bistro in Zamárdi (southern shore).

The special vegan/vegetarian prize went to Vánkos Restaurant in Badacsonyörs (northern shore) for their charcoal-grilled squash with clarified butter, served with burnt lemon’s juice and buttered corn foam made with homemade halved-pea miso.
The Discovery of the Year was Julcsi Kalácsoda in Siófok (southern shore), which spiced up its usual sweet chimney cake with lyophilized raspberries and also created a unique twist making the dessert’s savory version by adding cheese not as a filling or topping, but by frying it— with or without bacon— with the savory dough cakes, according to the release.
