After the upcoming long weekend of March 15, (a national holiday in remembrance of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848), the renovation work that began last year will continue on Hungarian motorways, László Szimicsku, communications director of the Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development (MKIF), told Világgazdaság. He stressed that since the weather is favorable, the Hungarian asphalt mixing plants have opened and the construction machinery can be deployed on time.
In September 2022, MKIF took over the operation, maintenance, and development of 1,237 kilometers of existing motorways in Hungary. In the very first year, in 2023, 235 kilometers and 19 percent of the main roadway were renewed.
László Szimicsku added that at least as much resurfacing work will be carried out this year on the motorways under their management, affecting nine domestic motorways.
Among these, the M3, M7, and M1 motorways will be the most heavily affected, in that order.
However, drivers can also see construction machinery on the M35, M30, M4, M70, and M15 motorways, as well as that 110 bridges are being renewed and the renovation of rest areas is ongoing. According to MKIF’s communications director, this means that the three-year renovation program is almost complete,
with around 40 percent of the entire main line to be renewed before the end of the year, leaving only three to four percent to be renovated in 2025.
In addition to the developments, new motorway sections will also be opened in the first month of spring. The final section of the new motorway, M6, linking Hungary and Croatia, will be opened in Hungary this March, and in Croatia approximately a year later. This means that it will be possible to drive on this line as far as the Villány (southern Hungary) junction. In addition, the Croats have started construction of the motorway between the Hungarian border and Beli Manastir (Pélmonostor). The construction permit for the section between Kneževo (Főherceglak) and the border could be issued in Croatia by next spring. Once completed, this highway will create a new road link between the two countries.
