Renowned film director Francis Ford Coppola posted a video from Budapest on his Instagram page, showing how he managed to surprised the Hungarian orchestra during the recording of his new film, reports Index.

Francis Ford Coppola was in Budapest to record the music for his upcoming new film Megalopolis, he announced on Instagram. The world star also “gave” the Hungarians an unexpected surprise.

I was recently in Budapest to record the soundtrack for the film Megalopolis,”

the Oscar-winning director captioned the video.

The director has been working for years on Megalopolis, an unprecedented, new technology, virtual effects-rich mega-project. Coppola is also financing the film, set in New York about an architect, out of his own pocket. He has even reportedly sold his California vineyards to raise funds.

Fact

Francis Ford Coppola is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. He is considered a leading figure in the New Hollywood film movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time. He has won 5 Oscars, 6 Golden Globes, 2 Palme d’Or and a British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). Coppola’s fame as a film director was cemented by the release of The Godfather (1972), which revolutionized the gangster film genre and received a strong commercial and critical reception.

On the last day of his stay in Hungary, the director wanted to surprise the orchestra, and as he wrote,

he appreciated the musicality and friendliness he had experienced in Hungary, so he conducted the Hungarian National Anthem.

“I so appreciated both the musicianship and friendliness of the Hungarian orchestra that I wanted to express my gratitude as I spoke to them on our last day of recording. Standing on the conductor’s platform I picked up the baton as if I were about to lead them in a performance, tapping on the music stand. Of course I had not prepared anything, but in my mind I assumed that they knew how to play their national anthem and whispered “What time signature is it in?,” he recounted the extraordinary experience, accompanied by a video.
