Hungary Today 2024.02.15.

Shooting of the film Nuremberg, starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, will begin in Hungary in a few weeks. The film, directed and written by James Vanderbilt, will be a historical drama and filming will start in Budapest in March, writes the Budapest Reporter.

The script will be written by James Vanderbilt, known for such big projects as David Fincher’s 2007 thriller Zodiac and The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield, reports Világgazdaság. The screenplay is based on the novel The Nazi and the Psychiatrist: Hermann Göring, Dr. Douglas M. Kelley, and a Fatal Meeting of Minds at the End of WWII by Jack El-Hai and will be shot by Dariusz Wolski, who has photographed films such as the House of Gucci and The Last Duel.

The plot follows the relationship between the powerful Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring, captured after the war, and the U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas M. Kelley.

Kelley, played by Rami Malek, has to prepare the prisoners for the Nuremberg trials, including Göring, played by Russell Crowe. In real life, Hermann Göring committed suicide on October 15, 1946, the day before his scheduled execution. The Nuremberg trials were the first legal proceedings in which the Allies (the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, and China) tried the leaders of Nazi Germany for their war crimes during the Second World War.

Fact

The Nuremberg Trials were a series of trials held in Nuremberg, Germany in 1945-46, in which former Nazi leaders were indicted and tried as war criminals by the International Military Tribunal. The indictment against them contained four counts of (1) crimes against peace (i.e. planning, initiating and waging wars of aggression in violation of international treaties and agreements), (2) crimes against humanity (i.e. exterminations, deportations and genocide), (3) war crimes (i.e. violations of the laws of war), and (4) “joint planning or conspiracy to commit the crimes listed in the first three counts.”

According to the filmmakers, the production presents a new aspect of the Nuremberg trials based on Kelley’s papers and medical notes. Crowe and Malek will be joined by Michael Shannon as Robert H. Jackson, the U.S. Attorney General who accompanied the trials.
