Controls Remain in Place at the Slovenian-Hungarian Border

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.05.23.

Slovenia will extend border controls on the Croatian and Hungarian borders for another six months until December, Slovenian Interior Minister Boštjan Poklukar announced on Wednesday.

The Minister said he had informed his Croatian and Hungarian counterparts and the European Commission of the decision.

The extension of border controls was announced by Ljubljana after Rome also extended them on the Italian-Slovenian border on Wednesday.

Slovenia reintroduced temporary border controls on October 21 last year, justified by threats to public order and internal security in the EU, the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, and recent terrorist attacks in some EU Member States. According to Poklukar, the situation has not improved since then, in fact it has gotten worse. He stressed that

border controls will continue to be targeted, i.e. not all passengers will be checked.

The Slovenian Minister noted that the measures would not cause more problems during the tourist season than during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Fact

As Hungary Today reported back in October last year, Slovenia has set up 14 checkpoints on the Croatian and Hungarian borders, 12 on the Croatian border, and two on the Hungarian side. EU citizens can use all border crossing points, while third-country nationals can only cross the border at these 14 points.
