The Slovenian government decided at a meeting on Friday to extend border controls on the Croatian and Hungarian borders until November 19, Slovenian public television reported.
Slovenia reintroduced temporary border controls on its borders with Croatia and Hungary on October 21, initially for ten days, but with a maximum extension of two months (including the ten days). As Hungary Today previously reported, Slovenian Interior Minister Boštjan Poklukar proposed the extension last week, as the original 10-day period would have expired on Monday.
The Ljubljana government has repeatedly justified its decision on the grounds of threats to public order and internal security in the EU, the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, and recent terrorist attacks in some EU Member States.
Border control will also be the main topic of a meeting of Croatian, Italian, and Slovenian interior ministers in Trieste on November 2. Italy has already indicated that it expects to maintain controls at the Slovenian border throughout the winter.
Slovenia has set up 14 checkpoints on the Croatian and Hungarian borders, 12 on the Croatian border, and two on the Hungarian border. EU citizens can use all border crossing points, while third-country nationals can only cross the border at these 14 points.
