Change Needed in the EU’s Migration and Africa Policy, Says Foreign Minister

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.02.05.

The European Union should pursue a migration and Africa policy that is completely different from the current one in order to prevent even more serious crises from developing, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stressed in Brussels.

Speaking at a press conference following the informal EU Foreign Affairs Council, the Minister noted that the continent’s security today undoubtedly starts in Africa, that is facing very serious challenges. Moreover, if the current migration policy in Brussels continues, the problems of the neighboring continent will be concentrated here, which would be hardly manageable. He warned that

Africa’s population has grown by 590 million in the last 20 years and is projected to grow by a further 750 million in the next 20 years, more than Europe’s population alone.

“The question is whether Africa’s population, which is growing by hundreds of millions, will stay in Africa or move to Europe. The answer to this depends on whether Africa is physically and economically safe and stable,” he said.

He added that Europe needs a completely different migration and Africa policy from the current one, that will create security on the continent through economic development and help to tackle the growing terrorist threat. Minister Szijjártó underlined that

Hungary has done its part and will continue to do its part to prevent new waves of migrants from Africa to Europe.

“Over five years, we have allocated around HUF 100 billion (EUR 260 million) in development funds to African countries to modernize their water systems, to provide people with clean, healthy drinking water, to improve their health care, their education systems and their public administration,” he listed. Furthermore, the politician also said that the government had provided some HUF 6.5 billion (EUR 16.9 million) to help Christians stay in their communities and was providing scholarships for 1,460 young Africans to study at universities in the country every year.

Fact

As Hungary Today previously reported, in addition to the above-mentioned assistance, Hungary has also completed the largest ever economic development program in Africa in Uganda, as part of which the country’s financial sector is now protected against cyber attacks. The project implemented by a Hungarian company had a budget of HUF 1.5 billion (EUR 3.9 million). The systems put in place under the project can significantly contribute to reducing potential risks, which is very important today as cyber security has become an important part of physical security.

Finally, the Minister pointed out that terrorism is particularly affecting the Sahel region today and that the government is working with willing countries in the region to reduce the threat of terrorism and thus the pressure of migration. “We have opened our development and humanitarian center in the capital of Chad. We are assisting the Chadian government to effectively implement the refugee supply and we are ready to support the Chadian government’s counter-terrorism efforts with a military mission,” he concluded.
