Budapest Airport Temporarily Takes over Part of the Debrecen Air Traffic

Hungary Today 2024.07.15.

Last week, the operator of the Debrecen International Airport announced in a statement that it had temporarily closed the airport due to a fault in the runway surface caused by persistent high temperatures. It could take at least a week to resolve the disruption at Hungary’s second largest airport.

After the closure of Debrecen International Airport on Thursday evening for an expected week due to technical reasons, Budapest Airport will take over the handling of flights and passengers from the airport, Világgazdaság reports.

Passengers who would have departed from Debrecen will be informed by their airline whether their flight will be rerouted or cancelled,

Budapest Airport said.

The first repair works have already been completed at the airport, László Papp, the mayor of Debrecen, wrote in a Facebook post. In cooperation with the airlines, 10 departing and 10 arriving flights have so far been rerouted to Liszt Ferenc International Airport, he said on Saturday.

For the Budapest Airport, the rerouting is expected to mean handling 3-4 extra flights a day, hence the passenger traffic at the capital’s airport could exceed 55,000 a day. The operator of the Liszt Ferenc International Airport in Budapest will provide assistance to passengers waiting at the support points set up earlier this month, but will also provide drinking water to those waiting outside the zones in view of the heat.

According to Budapest Airport, the situation has been made more difficult by the significant number of flight delays and cancellations that passengers have experienced in recent weeks across Europe, including in Budapest, due to the saturation of airspace.

In this situation, it is of paramount importance for the operator to continue to provide a high level of care for its passengers, the statement said. For this reason, an area has been designated in Terminals 2A and 2B where passengers can wait and rest, and the airport operator will distribute food and drink and feminine hygiene products if needed, and baby food, nappies and wipes will be provided for parents with young children.

In addition, in view of the heat warning, the airport operator is also providing free mineral water for people waiting outside the zones, and 13 drinking fountains are available to refill bottles.
