A letter of intent for the production of ammunition in Hungary was signed by N7 National Defense Industry Innovation Holding Zrt. and the Italian Beretta Group on behalf of the owner, Pietro Gussalli Beretta, with the countersignature of the Minister of Defense in Budapest, the Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday.
Quoting Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, the statement said that with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the N7 National Defense Industry Innovation Holding Zrt. and the Italian Beretta Group, which has a long tradition in the field, two new types of ammunition – very important for the Hungarian Defense Forces – will be produced in Hungary.
As the Minister highlighted,
the 7.62 millimeter and 12.7 millimeter ammunition will be used, among other things, for the armament of our well-known Lynx and Gidrán combat vehicles.”
“The production of both our devices has been transferred to Hungary, and soon the ammunition will be produced in Hungary as well,” emphasized Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
The Minister stressed that “in the current security situation, both types of ammunition are in high demand, but by producing them domestically we can increase the security of supply.
At the same time, we can also set ourselves up for export production in the long term, thus strengthening the Hungarian economy.”
The Hungarian defense industry has made outstanding progress in recent years. There are many investments across the country, but a few are worth highlighting: One of the main partners is Rheinmetall, a German automotive and arms manufacturer, headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany. The first agreement with the company was signed in 2020, when the purchase of around 218 Rheinmetall Lynx KF41 combat vehicles was decided for the Defense Forces. Under the terms of the contract, all but the first 46 units will be produced in Hungary at the factory in western Hungary, Zalaegerszeg. In accordance with this, Rheinmetall Hungary Zrt. was established in 2020.
In addition, in December 2020, an agreement was reached to set up a plant for the production of medium and large caliber ammunition in Várpalota (western Hungary). The plant will produce 30, 120, and 155 millimeter ammunition, used by the new combat vehicles of the Defense Forces, largely for export.
