Europe’s Most Advanced Ammunition Factory Complex under Construction

Hungary Today 2023.09.25.

Work on the construction of the new ammunition factory, also known as the Defense Industrial Park near Várpalota (a hundred miles east of Budapest), is progressing according to plan. This was confirmed by the topping out ceremony held on Friday September 22, attended by Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, honvedelem.hu reported.

The topping out ceremony is an 800-year-old tradition among builders. Celebrating it means that the highest walls of the building have been completed. The investment by the ammunition factory in Várpalota has already reached this stage.

At the ceremony, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that Hungary dreamed big in 2016, when it recognized the challenges that the country faces, both in military and security terms, and took action.

Hungary dared to take action and created the necessary conditions, and now we are standing in the middle of this 400-hectare site where the most modern ammunition factory complex is being built, I dare say in the whole of Europe,”

he said, adding that the goal and the driving force had not been changed by the war in Ukraine, nor the economic difficulties Europe was facing.

Regarding the ammunition factory complex in Várpalota, he affirmed that

the HUF 300 billion (EUR 767 million) investment will create 1,000-1,200 jobs in the region.

At the event, Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, praised Hungary’s commitment and initiative, in line with the European Union’s determination to increase European ammunition production capabilities. Commending the progress of the investment, he admitted that he was impressed by what he had seen. He also congratulated Hungary on the achievement of having almost doubled its defense spending budget in just five years, describing it as a model for other European nations.
