There can be no winner in the Russian-Ukrainian war, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Wednesday in Balatonfüred, according to a report in Magyar Nemzet. Following his state of the nation speech on Saturday, the prime minister addressed members of the two government parties Fidesz-KDNP parliamentary grouping ahead of the spring session of parliament, which is due to begin soon.
According to the report, Viktor Orbán told the faction members that the government had discussed recently whether the Hungarian attitude to the war should be changed. They came to the decision that it should not, because the Hungarian national interest still requires the country to stay out of this war. The prime minister emphasized that this is what the Hungarian people decided in April: not to supply weapons, and not to join any war coalition.
Orbán stressed in his speech that Hungary is not cheering for anyone, because there can be no winner in this war. He believes that Russia cannot win, because the entire Western world has lined up behind Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia is a nuclear power, and a nuclear power cannot be cornered, because it could start a nuclear war.
The Hungarian Prime Minister thinks that Europe has been weakened in the past year, partly because the Biden administration imposed its interests in Brussels at the expense of European interests, and that the response to the war, the “tsunami of sanctions,” had begun to weaken the European economy, while America, rich in cheap energy, was unaffected. Moreover, the prime minister is reported to have said that Europe’s military strength had also begun to weaken, because the war had reduced the European armies’ stocks, and they had not been replenished.
The article concluded that according to Orbán,
Europe has lost its independence, and economic and military strength in less than a year. In this situation, Hungary must represent its own interests, because only then can it emerge from the war intact and stronger.
The prime minister added that to do this, three things must be done: Hungary’s independence must be defended, the strength of the Hungarian economy must be preserved, and the country’s military strength must be reinforced.
Referring to the start of the political season, the report by Magyar Nemzet said that in his speech, Orbán stated that the opponents of Fidesz-KDNP are “the pro-war international interest groups consisting of the Biden administration, the pro-war Brussels bureaucrats and pro-war politicians,” and the Hungarian left led by former Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, which according to Orbán “has been bought and only does what its clients ask.” As a third group, he named international speculators who want to profit in times of war.
It was not only the Hungarian Prime Minister who called for peace recently. Pope Francis, speaking in the Vatican’s Audience Hall on the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine, called on the leaders of the nations to commit to ending the war in Ukraine, achieving a ceasefire and launching peace talks.
“One year has passed since the beginning of this absurd and cruel war. Can God forgive so many crimes and so much violence?” asked Pope Francis. He added that “a victory built on ruins will never be a real victory.”
