A New Car Brand Could Pop Up Soon on Hungarian Streets

Hungary Today 2023.05.18.

The first Turkish passenger car, the electric-only Toggo (Türkiye’nin Otomobili Girisim Grubu), could see being launched on the Hungarian market. Not only are dealers aware of the idea, but the Hungarian government is also open to the issue – reports Világgazdaság.

In an interview with the Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency, Péter Szijjártó said that the self-produced Togg is a good indicator of the development of the Turkish economy, as only a higher-level economy can create a national automotive industry. He also revealed that he took part in a joint test drive with Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank, and found the Turkish car to be very comfortable.

More importantly, Mr Szijjártó advised his Turkish counterpart

to keep the Hungarian market in mind when mass-producing the Togg, as he was convinced that the Turkish car would be able to compete with other car brands already on the Hungarian market in terms of value for money.

Togg was established in 2018 as a consortium of five Turkish companies and manufactures exclusively pure electric models at its plant in Gemlik. Its first model is the Togg T10X, which went on sale in March this year. Togg is indeed the first large Turkish group, but it is not the first Turkish car to go into production, that title goes to Devrim.

The T10X is a classic SUV, or sports utility vehicle. The first orders are scheduled for delivery in summer 2023. These will most likely be delivered to Turkish state officials and embassies, not least because the Turkish state has committed to buying 30,000 Toggos by 2035. In any case, orders will be taken from European markets as early as 2024. The car will be available with two battery capacities, with a range of 300 and 500 kilometers, with a 160-kilowatt electric motor in rear-wheel drive configuration and a 320-kilowatt all-wheel drive version. Experts say it could be a direct rival to the Tesla Model Y or the Volkswagen ID.4.

The basic T10X model costs just over 16 million forints (43.000 euros). The higher-spec version is priced at around 20.5 million forints (55.000 euros). In comparison an electric Dacia costs only around 10 million forints (27.000 euros).

But it would not be the only Togg model: the manufacturer promises to have five models in production by 2030, including a sedan and a hatchback. These are billed as specifically affordable cars.
