People Smugglers Move Operations Away from the Hungarian Border

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.03.13.

The Prime Minister’s Chief Advisor on Internal Security highlighted to the M1 news channel that major human smuggling gangs have shifted their operations to the Bosnian-Croatian border. This shift can be attributed to the effective guarding of the Hungarian border by the police and the successful functioning of the border barrier.

György Bakondi noted that on the morning of March 12 alone, 627 border offenders were apprehended at the Hungarian border, a tenfold increase compared to the previous year.

Effective border control has redirected migrant movement towards Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia,

causing a significant increase in migrant activity in those areas, impacting neighboring countries such as Slovenia, Austria, and Italy.

Mr. Bakondi also highlighted an increase in accidents on shipping routes as the weather improves, resulting in more fatalities compared to the previous year. He attributed the surge in migrant numbers this spring to both weather conditions and decisions made by the European Parliament regarding the migration pact.

The Chief Advisor expressed concerns about the hurried drafting of regulations, which he believes violates their own implementing rules.

He suggested that this rush is driven by political considerations, with a desire to secure adoption before potential changes in the composition of the European Parliament.

Bakondi emphasized the importance of upcoming elections in shaping future policies, and expressed hope that future parliament and committee compositions would allow for corrections of decisions made hastily.
