State Secretary Speaks about Upcoming Hungarian EU Presidency

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.11.

“We believe in European cooperation based on respect and sovereignty,” wrote Barna Pál  Zsigmond, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of European Union Affairs, in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

He pointed out that the fact that Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, is running as an MEP, has caused a political uproar in Brussels, so Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the most experienced in this field, could temporarily chair the body of heads of state and government.

He referred to the left’s fear that due to the poor handling of the recent crises in Brussels, a right-wing victory is expected in many national and EP elections across Europe.

He added that the strengthening of the right is not surprising.

The state secretary pointed out that Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield said it would be a failure if she viewed the Hungarian presidency as normal, and called on the current Belgian presidency to continue the rule of law case against Hungary. In this context, she also mentioned that Finnish MEP Petri Sarvamaa is directly calling for the withdrawal of Hungarian voting rights.

Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield is a French MEP from Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance and member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs. She is known for her frequent attacks on the conservative government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Delbos-Corfield is the active participant of the ongoing procedure based on Article No.7 against Hungary.

The Hungarian Presidency will be excellent again,” Zsigmond said.

“We are prepared, and we will consider everything constructively based on whether the proposal in question provides real answers to real problems, whether it takes into account the interests of Hungarian and EU citizens, our country, and the other Member States, and thus the whole of Europe.”

Hungary has an interest in the unity of the European Union- in a responsible cooperation which has not been the case in recent times.

Europe was built on a culture of dialogue; we believe in cooperation based on respect and compromise,” he concluded.
