Slovak Politician Slams Finnish MEP for his Attacks on Hungary

Hungary Today 2024.01.11.

Slovak Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Katarína Roth Nevedalová from the Slovak Social Democrats (Smer-SSD) pointed out that a new initiative is circulating among her colleagues, sparked by a Finnish MEP, which aims to invoke Article 7 and take away Hungary’s voting rights in the EU Council because of the policies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, reported Hlavne Spravy.

Roth Nevedalová commented on social media that “Finnish-Hungarian relations have not been smooth, but Hungarians have eventually supported Finland’s entry into NATO at an important moment. A Finnish colleague from the Christian Democratic faction (EPP), to which Orbán’s party also belonged for a very long time, went into battle pointlessly. Of course, it is an election fight, because in five months’ time, on 8 June, we will have the European elections. A fine start to the campaign, albeit a somewhat pointless one”, the Slovak politician remarked with a pinch of irony.

She noted that in his letter, the Finnish MEP demanded that the European Parliament set an example and finally stop Hungary’s voting rights in the Council for alleged violations of the rule of law or human rights. “Because Hungary is said to be making the European Union dysfunctional and overall there is supposed to be a clear leadership of the European Parliament.

What has happened in Hungary recently? I think nothing. Our southern neighbor even managed to persuade the European Commission to release some of the EU funds to them. What that was for, we all suspect, but I also think it is a sign of the cleverness of the Hungarian Prime Minister, who cannot objectively be blamed for fighting for his country and trying to get pre-approved, suspended EU funds for it.

Although the price was that he walked out of the room during the vote on the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine, which he has long criticized”, wrote Roth Nevedalová.

Doing so, in MEP Roth Nevedalová’s opinion, the Hungarian Prime Minister acted pragmatically and did not block the negotiations. “How much will this cost him at home remains to be seen. However, there is no crisis and basically almost everyone in Brussels can be satisfied. So the argument that Hungary is blocking something is not correct. The real reason behind this whole ridiculous spectacle of a Finnish politician is something else,” she suggested.

“The EU has its own president. That you did not know about him? Do not worry. We do not meet him much either. He does not like his job very much and he likes to fly in expensive planes and talk about his responsibility towards finance and ecology from time to time,” said Roth Nevedalová, referring to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and continued: “A standard hypocritical Belgian politician, a former prime minister of this country.”

She continued by saying that “Charles Michel has decided that he is fed up and wants to stand in the European elections. According to recent practice, the interim President should be the Prime Minister of the country holding the Presidency. And that will be Hungary and Viktor Orbán from 1 July 2024. How ironic”, closed her words Roth Nevedalová.
