New Models of the World’s Most Modern Tanks Arrive in the Country

Hungary Today 2024.01.10.

The development of the armed forces is proceeding at full speed, with the latest equipment constantly arriving, and this morning, new Leopard 2A7 tanks arrived in Tata (northwestern Hungary), Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovnicky wrote on his social media page.

“The crown jewels of Hungarian force development,” “the backbone of deterrence” and “the king of the battlefield” – these are some of the ways used to describe the world’s most modern Leopard 2A7HU tank, reports honvedelem.hu. Three of these military vehicles were delivered to the “Klapka György” 1st Armored Brigade in Tata on January 10.

This brings the number of tanks developed for Hungary at the brigade to eight, but the process is far from over, as

a total of forty-four units of the high-tech military equipment will arrive in Hungary by 2028, along with five Wisent 2HU tractors and three Leguan 2HU bridge-launching combat vehicles.

The systematization, operation, and application of 21st century technology requires a completely new approach from the soldiers, and the Leopard 2A4HU tanks that arrived in Hungary in 2020, thanks to the Defense and Military Development Program, have helped to prepare them for this.

The armored body of the vehicle is 7.7 meters long, and with the gun forward, the length of the tank is 10.97 meters. The width without additional armor is 3.76 meters and the height is 3.03 meters. Its firepower is provided by an L55A1 type Rheinmetall tank gun with a length of L55 gauge and a 120 millimeter gauge, allowing accurate firing from a range of up to 5,000 meters. The tank is also equipped with a 7.62 millimeter parallel-mounted machine gun, a 12.7 millimeter remotely operated machine gun and 16.76 millimeter smoke grenade launchers capable of firing fragmentation grenades.

Fact

According to various industry reports, the Leopard 2A7HU tanks are built with reinforced bottoms, front and roof armor, and are resistant to improvised explosive devices and anti-tank mines. The vehicle is equipped with protection against incendiary liquids (e.g. Molotov cocktails, napalm) and an improved automatic fire extinguishing system.

As part of the Defense and Force Development Program, Hungary has ordered 44 of Leopard 2A7HU tanks. The tanks will be placed in service at the “Klapka György” 1st Armored Brigade in Tata.
