The objective of the Demographic Roundtable is to transform Hungary from a country with a declining population into a country with a growing population, said Head of State Katalin Novák at the inaugural meeting of the body she established on Monday.

Katalin Novák, who also serves as chair of the body, said that in the past thirteen years the country has achieved significant results and has moved in a positive demographic direction that is hardly ever seen in developed Western countries. She recalled that the call for a family-friendly turnaround was made in 2010. She said that the family-friendly turnaround had been achieved, but the demographic turnaround had not yet arrived.

The aim of the Demographic Roundtable is to achieve a demographic turnaround,

she stressed.

Novák added that Hungary has been facing a “demographic winter” for more than four decades, which she feared would turn into a “demographic ice age” if we do not do something about it. There is not a single prosperous country with enough children to maintain its population, she said. In her opinion, it may be a logical response to the demographic problem to “replace the resources needed from outside, relying on immigration rather than births.” Hungary, in contrast, does not consider mass migration to be the solution to the demographic problem, but rather the support of childbirth, she emphasized.

The head of state noted that

the Demographic Roundtable is not a decision-making, governmental forum. It can make proposals to the government and encourage people to take part in the common thinking.

The Demographic Roundtable is a consultative and proposing forum based on cooperation between the public and civil sectors, churches, and academia. Its secretary is Ágnes Hornung, State Secretary for Family Affairs at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation.
