A solidarity fundraising campaign is being launched by the Hungarian Interchurch Aid to help over 100,000 people fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh.

In its statement, the humanitarian aid agency said that more than 100,000 Armenians have fled Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia as a result of the severe humanitarian crisis that has recurred and escalated sharply in recent weeks. Conflicts, resulting in civilian casualties, and the fear of the closure of the escape route have caused the fleeing crowds to leave almost everything behind.

The Hungarian Interchurch Aid, in cooperation with its Armenian partner organization with a local church background, is seeking to provide immediate assistance to families arriving in the Armenian Gegharkunik, Ararat, and Kotayk regions.

In addition to the distribution of packages containing food, medical supplies, and other necessities of daily life, they also plan to provide cash assistance to around 1,000 refugees, ensuring the greatest flexibility in their vulnerable situation. The Hungarian aid agency added that “in view of the fact that most of the communities involved are Christian, the Hungarian Lutheran Church has joined the aid agency’s solidarity action to share our thoughts, sympathy, and efforts to alleviate the suffering of our Armenian brothers and sisters.”

Azbej Tristan, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, responsible for programs to help persecuted Christians, announced on his social media page that Hungary is supporting the humanitarian work of the Armenian Red Cross Society with HUF 40 million (EUR 102,000) through the Hungary Helps program.

With this support, the organization will provide assistance to people of Armenian nationality who have been displaced from the Karabakh region to Armenia due to the conflict that has been raging there for three decades,”

he said.

Donors wishing to join the fundraising campaign can find all the details on the website of the Hungarian Interchurch Aid.
