New Freeway Tolls Announced for 2024

Hungary Today 2023.09.29.

The 2024 tolls for freeways have been announced. According to the statement, drivers will have to spend more on tolls next year, reports Magyar Nemzet.

In category D1, vehicles with up to 5+2 seats and a maximum authorized weight of up to 3.5 tons, a ten-day vignette (toll sticker) will cost HUF 6,400 (EUR 16) from next year. This corresponds to a price increase of HUF 900 (EUR 2). The price of a monthly vignette will be HUF 10,360 (EUR 27) and an annual vignette HUF 57,260 (EUR 147), meaning a price increase of HUF 1,460 and 8,070 (EUR 4 and 21 respectively).

A county vignette will cost HUF 6,600 (EUR 17). In this case, there is a difference of HUF 880 (EUR 2). Furthermore, it should be noted that annual country and annual county motorcycle vignettes can be purchased as D1 tariff class products.

The exact price list is available at this link. The newspaper highlights that

an EU regulation will make it compulsory to sell daily vignettes from the end of March 2024, but no information about this has been found on the website so far.

Autopalyamatrica.hu reported in June that demand for the one-day vignette is very high, not only among Hungarians but also among foreigners. The vignette for the shortest period currently available is valid for all toll roads in Hungary for a total of 10 consecutive calendar days from the specified start date or the purchase date until 24:00 on the 10th day.

In 2022, the European Union voted to reform the transport and charging systems. This means that to ensure fair treatment of occasional road users from abroad, it will be possible to buy a vignette for a shorter period of time, up to one day. The website points out that

electric or hybrid vehicles may also benefit from discounts.

Member States were given two years to prepare for the new rules and to implement the new vignette system in 2022, so it is expected that one-day vignettes will be available in 2024.
