Hungarian Folk Ensemble Performs Traditional Dance on the Great Wall of China

More than 7,000 people shared a video of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble on Facebook, posted from China, writes Magyar Nemzet.

The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble is representing Hungary in China for the first time since 2008. The troupe performed at the Belt & Road Great Wall International Folk Culture and Arts Festival. On Tuesday, they reached the end of the tour and welcomed the Hungarians from the Great Wall of China.

They performed in the city of Langfang, then made a quick visit to Beijing, and of course visited the Great Wall of China. Furthermore,

there they did something that perhaps no one has ever done before: they performed a verbunk (traditional Hungarian dance from the 18th century).

The video has been shared by more than 7,000 people on Facebook.

The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble was founded in 1950. Their aim is to discover, cultivate, and develop the traditions of songs, dance, and music of the Hungarian people, and then to make them familiar to Hungarians and the peoples of other countries. Their first independent performance was held in the Erkel Theater in Budapest on May 14, 1951. Since then, the ensemble’s dance troupe, orchestra, and choir have come a long way and their performances include historical music and dance, authentic folk music and folk dance, dramatic play, world music, and spectacle theater based on traditional elements.

In its seventy years of existence, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble has become one of the world’s most traveled ensembles, thanks to its colorful and rich repertoire. Its artistic achievements have been recognized with the Béla Bartók Memorial Prize in 2006, the Prima Prize and the Prima Primissima Audience Prize in 2007, and the Budapest Prize in 2014.
