No Shortage of Hungarians’ Favorite Schnapps This Year

Hungary Today 2023.08.18.

Plum yields are expected to vary widely across the country this year, with poor harvest expected in the counties of Bács-Kiskun and Pest, accounting for the majority of the area under production, and in Transdanubia. Meanwhile, the smaller part of crops, in the north-eastern part of the country, is expected to have a medium to good harvest, reports Világgazdaság.

In Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, eastern Hungary, where 1,636 hectares of plums are grown, most people are satisfied with the harvest, according to regional newspaper Szon. The news is not insignificant, if only because Hungary has a long tradition of plum schnapps and jams from Szatmár.

Fact

Szatmár plum schnapps is a Hungarian drink of protected origin, a mirror clear fruit spirit with a pale yellow color from maturation, with a bitter almond-like core. It has an alcohol content of minimum 40%. It is made exclusively from plums, from fully ripe plums of the Penyige and Beszterce varieties.

Producers are optimistic about the plum harvest in the eastern Hungarian region. Gábor Kőrösi, a grower who also runs the Lekvárda jam manufacture in Penyige, pointed out that

the April frosts had arrived when the flowers were still in a protected state, and that there was no lack of rainfall later on.

Ákos Horváth, who is engaged in organic fruit production in Olcsva, reported that the ripening and flowering of the Penyige plum trees (often called ‘do-not-know plums’, Hungarian: nemtudom szilva) had already started and that the frosts had avoided the time of flowering and fruiting. He added that due to much precipitation, the harvest could be double that of last year. However, he pointed out that the quality of the crop is still in question.

Attila Batta, manager of the Golden Plum Distillery in Jánd, said that while the supply of lepotica plums is already plentiful, many people have started to pick the Penyige plums prematurely, although the quality of both schnapps and jam will be best from ripe plums.

However, the situation is not so good in the central part of the country, where producers expect a poor harvest, as well as in the Transdanubian region.

Plum growing areas of 5,848 hectares across the country are expected to yield around 40-50 thousand tons this year.

A significant proportion of the plums produced in the country, around 60 percent, are processed by the industry, and the fruit is used as a raw material for jam and stewed plums, as well as for schnapps.

Plums are a real vitamin bomb: they are a natural source of vitamins A, B, C, E and K, and are high in antioxidants and minerals.

Its vitamin and antioxidant content is not only important for the prevention of cancer, but can also be an effective anti-wrinkle treatment.

Plums are also known as the natural secret of slimming, because they are not only effective in losing weight, but also prevent obesity due to their chlorogenic acid content. A nutritious fruit, it is an effective solution for anemia and iron deficiency, improving even well-being. With 85% water content, plums are a very good thirst quencher and are a well-known laxative thanks to their fiber and sorbitol content. One or two handfuls of fresh plums or prunes a day help to move the intestines and promote the elimination of waste products.
