Survey Shows Career Starters Plan to Work at Least Five Years at a Job

In Hungary, more than 45 percent of 18-25 year-olds plan to work for five or more years in one job, Work Force Kft. said.

The Career Starter Index, commissioned by the HR services provider, also showed that career starters are increasingly loyal. In last year’s survey, 39 percent of respondents said they planned to work for an employer for at least five years.

The survey found that most young people think they will be able to move up in their career within two years, while 46 percent see between three and five years as a realistic timeframe for promotion.

It was highlighted that the number of those who expect to be with the same employer for less than a year was negligible.

They also pointed out that 76 percent of those surveyed would like to take part in further training, which the majority would do within two years. In addition, young people were open to new career opportunities, with 64% of those starting a career wanting to learn a different area of expertise in the next few years.

In Hungary, people aged 25-54 spend an average of 7.9 years at a job, compared to 14.2 years for people aged 55-64. For people in their 20s and 30s, it is difficult to show comparable figures, as many of them have just entered the labor market. A commonly held view about young workers is that they are “job-hoppers,” meaning that they find it difficult to stay at a job for long and are constantly in need of change. However, a recent national representative survey found that 58% of young workers plan to stay at the same job for five to ten years.

They indicated that the proportion of respondents who do their job without any particular ambition has decreased by 12 percent from 2022 to 2023, while twice as many said they would like to become managers and be responsible for more people’s work.

The press release quoted Tamás Pappas, Branch Manager of Job Force School Cooperative, part of Work Force HR, saying that they are seeing

internships becoming increasingly popular, even among younger students, as they give them the chance to gain work experience and develop their skills in a real working environment.

Trainees who want to focus on their skills will also find it easier to move around in the labor market later on, he added.
