Kossuth and Jászai Mari Award-winning actress Dorottya Udvaros was elected the Nation’s Actress by the current holders of the title on Monday in Budapest, the National Theater announced to MTI.
Dorottya Udvaros was elected to replace Erzsi Máthé, who passed away on May 8th; the decision was announced by the National Theater’s CEO, Attila Vidnyánszky, who informed the actress about the decision, the theater said in a statement.
The title of Actor or Actress of the Nation can be awarded to the artist chosen by the title holders for his or her
outstanding work in the field of Hungarian theater, the development and promotion of national theater, the interpretation of national literature and the cultivation of the Hungarian language.
The title may be held by a maximum of twelve people at a time, and if one of them dies, the other holders of the title will decide who will take the vacant place.
The title of Actor of the Nation is awarded to a person who has performed outstandingly in a leading role or in a series of episodic roles, has reached the age of 62, has been an actor for 40 years or has spent at least 20 seasons on the stage of the National Theater, in at least one role per season.
The title of “National Actor” is currently held by Levente Király, Gyula Bodrogi, Géza Tordy, Piroska Molnár, György Cserhalmi, László Szacsvay, Éva Almási, Mari Csomós, Tamás Jordán, Zsuzsa Lehoczky and Lajos Balázsovits.
Erzsi Máthé died in the 95th year of her life, a few days before her birthday on 16 May. A Kossuth and two-time Jászai Mari Prize winner, she was a meritorious and distinguished artist and a perpetual member of the Company of Immortals.
Dorottya Udvaros, newly elected as the nation’s actress, after graduating from the Academy of Theater and Film Arts, signed a contract with the Szigligeti Theatre in Szolnok in 1978. In 1981, she was a member of the National Theater, then a founding member of the Katona József Theater, and subsequently performed at the New Theater and the Bárka Theater.

Dorottya Udvaros has given unforgettable performances in countless roles on stage and in film.
Her work has been honored with the Jászai Mari Prize in 1983, the Kossuth Prize in 1990 and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Hungarian Film Academy in 2022. She is a perpetual member of the Society of Immortals and an honorary citizen of Budapest.
