Ukrainian Handball Players Thank Hungary in a Unique Way

Hungary Today 2023.05.08.

Ukrainian women’s handball team members posed for a team photo with jerseys that had the names of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó written on them after their World Cup qualifying match against Northern Macedonia in Kisvárda, eastern Hungary, on April 11.

The team probably expressed their gratitude to Hungary for providing the venue for the World Cup qualifying match. The President of the Ukrainian Handball Federation approached Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in early February to help the Ukrainian women’s team host North Macedonia in Hungary, according to a video posted on Facebook by Foreign Affairs Secretary of State Tamás Menczer.

He said that

of course, we immediately rushed to help the Ukrainians so that Ukraine could host their opponent in Kisvárda on April 11.”

Kisvárda is located in the eastern part of Hungary, close to the Ukrainian border.

The Ukrainians eventually won the match 31-22, and on aggregate, they managed to progress with a 55-44 aggregate score.
