Hungary Today 2022.06.21.

Following a thrilling battle, the Hungarian men’s saber team managed to grab a well-deserved gold medal at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) European Championships in Turkey on Monday.

The men’s saber event saw Olympic bronze medalists Áron Szilágyi, András Szatmári, Tamás Decsi, and Csanád Gémesi clinching the title of Europe’s best in a close battle against the much lower-ranked Ukrainian team.

The Hungarian quartet started the fourth day of the tournament in the final eight, first beating Poland and then France in the semi-finals.

In the final clash, the Hungarian team had a tough time at first against the Ukrainians, who were still leading at 30-29, but Gémesi and Szatmári passed the baton with a one and three-set lead, after which three-time Olympic champion Áron Szilágyi was able to seal the fate of the match securing the gold for Hungary.

The men’s saber team, having won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, last won a continental event in 2018. With this victory, the athletes secured the first medal for the Hungarian delegation in Turkey.
