China’s Ministry of Transport is set to deliver 20 shunting locomotives from CRRC, China’s leading railway rolling stock manufacturer, to Hungary’s MÁV (Hungarian State Railways) within two years, writes Mandiner. This purchase will strengthen Hungary’s railway capabilities with efficient, eco-friendly locomotives tailored to local needs.
CRRC (China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation), formed in 2015 from the merger of CSR Corporation and CNR Corporation, is China’s largest railway rolling stock manufacturer. Specializing in designing and maintaining a diverse range of railway vehicles, CRRC has pioneered hybrid technology, developing electric-diesel locomotives capable of operating on electrified lines and in off-grid areas. These hybrids are popular in urban environments due to lower emissions and improved operational efficiency.
CRRC produces various types of locomotives, including electric, diesel, and hybrid models. Although as of now, the specific models for Hungary remain unspecified.
The popular shunting locomotives include the YD2 series, known for maneuverability in tight spaces and heavy load handling, and the YD4, a heavy-duty pusher ideal for industrial settings. Qishuyan diesel-hydraulic models are also valued for reliability in freight applications, while hybrid models offer flexible use across electrified and non-electrified routes, appealing for both industrial and urban needs.
One of CRRC’s main strengths is its ability to design customized solutions that meet the diverse infrastructure and operational needs of countries worldwide.
As Hungary Today reported, CRRC’s recent partnership with Acemil underscores its commitment to supporting local economies through domestic manufacturing investments. CRRC also prioritizes sustainability, developing low-emission rail vehicles with intelligent systems that adjust speed and optimize consumption, enhancing safety and efficiency.
With CRRC’s upcoming delivery, Hungary’s rail infrastructure will gain advanced, adaptable locomotives suited to modern standards, reflecting a joint vision for a sustainable, reliable railway future.
