Apples and Cinnamon Bring Win at the “Gastronomic Oscars”

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.31.

After winning twenty chocolate and three ice cream awards, Bonbonier’s bakery division has been shortlisted for an international award this year, writes Magyar Nemzet.

Last year’s “gastronomic Oscars” were won by the Hungarian chocolate maker for its oolong-raspberry-rose tea-flavored bonbons and cinnamon hot chocolate. This year, their recently popular artisan pastries have also made it to the winning entries.

I found the classic sweet rolls [so-called “snails”] boring, so we revisited traditional Hungarian ingredients and added apple, which harmonizes beautifully with cinnamon, to our classic cinnamon rolls,” said Tamás Csomor, head of Bonbonier’s bakery.

According to the jury, “this apple cinnamon roll is visually stunning with its large layers of dough and aromatic cinnamon taste. It is simply appetizing. The layers of apples are clearly visible when cut through, and the pastry is flaky, light, and pleasantly crispy. The caramelized flavors of apple and cinnamon blend seamlessly, creating a delightful fusion of tastes.”

“I am very proud of this award,” Tamás Csomor continued, “especially since we began developing our puff pastry with the a team from Roli, and Mazsola confectionary, only in March this year. This award reflects their expertise, our desire to learn, and our philosophy of taste. Creating a product that was delivered frozen and baked by the judges, yet maintained its quality as if freshly made, was a unique challenge. The product has proven suitable for both home and hotel baking, as well as for on-site use.” He added, “I believe this is the first Hungarian baked good to win a Great Taste award, following the poppy seed roll.”

Fact

The Great Taste Awards, known as the Oscars of the food industry, nominated a wide range of products in 37 categories in 2024. A jury of 500 experts evaluated 13,672 products from March to June, with only around 200 receiving the top three-star rating. The awards signal outstanding quality and taste to consumers.
