Hungarian Triumph at the World’s Most Prestigious Wine Competition

Hungary Today 2024.06.23.

Hungary did brilliantly at the Decanter World Wine Awards: the prestigious jury awarded one Best in Show, 4 platinum, 13 gold, 56 silver, and 67 bronze medals to Hungarian entries.

The world’s most prestigious wine and sparkling wine competition was held for the 21st time this year, with more than 18,000 entries from 57 countries, Turizmus.com reports. Around 250 wine experts, including 61 Masters of Wine and 20 Master Sommeliers, gathered in London to judge the competition.

Judged in accordance with extremely strict rules, only the best wines (scoring 95 points or more) are awarded a gold medal, while a platinum award is given to the most outstanding wines (97-100 points), after a re-tasting of the gold medal winners. Only the best wines in their category are awarded Best in Show.

Hungary did very well in the competition, with the prestigious jury awarding numerous prizes, a Best in Show, 4 platinum, 13 gold, 56 silver, and 67 bronze medals to Hungarian entries. Kreinbacher Estate’s Brut Classic and Prestige Brut sparkling wines also took home gold medals from the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards, Kreinbacher Estate said. All five of Kreinbacher’s entries took home medals: in addition to the two gold medals, the Rosé Brut sparkling wine took home a silver medal, and the Juhfark 2022 and Öreg Tőkék wines 2021 won bronze medals.

In addition to Kreinbacher sparkling wine, the gold medal winners included wines from the Balatonfüred-Csopak, Tokaj, Somló, and Szekszárd wine regions.

A total of 50 Best in Show were judged at the event, hence it is especially impressive that a Hungarian wine was able to take home such a distinction,

thanks to the 6 Puttonyos 2019 Aszú wine from Gizella Winery. The four platinum medals went to Tokaj wines, with Balassa winning two, Pajzos Tokaj one, and Sauska Tokaj one.
