After Wednesday’s price increase, fuel prices in Hungary will continue to rise from Friday. Since January, the price of petrol has risen by HUF 89 (EUR 0.22 / 1 EUR=393.58 HUF) per liter at the wholesale level, while the price of diesel has increased by HUF 75, of which HUF 41 is due to the mandatory excise tax increase, Világgazdaság reports.

According to the latest data published by fuel price monitoring portal Holtanklojak.hu, prices will rise again from Friday. This is the second increase this week, as prices had already risen on Wednesday.

The website reports that the purchase price of petrol and diesel will rise by HUF 7 and HUF 5 gross respectively in the second half of the week. If the above wholesale price changes are reflected in retail prices, motorists will see the following average prices at petrol stations from Friday:

  • 95 petrol – HUF 631 per liter
  • diesel – HUF 648 per liter.

It is important to note that these are average prices, from which actual retail prices may differ by a few forints. At the moment – and this will remain the case until midnight on Thursday – the average price of 95 petrol is HUF 624 per liter and HUF 643 per liter for diesel. However, a liter of fuel is around HUF 50 more expensive at gas stations along motorways.

It remains to be seen exactly how gas stations will price the newly announced wholesale price increase from Friday, but so far this year,

the price of petrol has risen by HUF 89 per liter at the wholesale level, and the price of diesel by HUF 75,

although HUF 41 of this is due to the mandatory January excise tax increase. Excluding this, there is an increase of HUF 48 and HUF 34 for petrol and diesel respectively. The increase of around HUF 80 per liter means that an average 50-liter tank of fuel costs between HUF 3,500 and 4,000 more now than it did in December last year, when prices were already sky-high.
