Fuel Prices Rising Yet Again after Last Week’s Slight Dip

Hungary Today 2024.03.19.

New fuel prices have been announced in Hungary, with prices at petrol stations going up this week, Világgazdaság reports, citing data from Holtankoljak.hu.

According to the fuel price monitoring website Holtankoljak.hu, there will be a small price increase at petrol stations from Wednesday. The purchase price of diesel will rise by HUF 5 gross (1 EUR = 394.88 HUF), while filling stations will pay HUF 2 gross more for diesel to wholesalers. This increase is expected to be reflected in pump prices, so mid-week average prices could be as follows:

  • 95 petrol – HUF 624 per liter (EUR 1.58)
  • diesel – HUF 643 per liter (EUR 1.63).

It is important to stress that these are average prices, from which actual retail prices may differ by a few forints. At the moment – and this will remain the case until midnight on Tuesday – the average price of 95 petrol is HUF 619 per liter and HUF 641 per liter for diesel. According to Világgazdaság, petrol is currently typically HUF 618 at filling stations, while diesel costs HUF 642.

However, a liter of fuel is around HUF 50 more expensive at filling stations along motorways.

It remains to be seen exactly how filling stations will price the newly announced wholesale price increase from Wednesday, but so far this year, the price of petrol has risen by HUF 82 per liter at the wholesale level, and the price of diesel by HUF 70, although HUF 41 of this is due to the mandatory January excise tax increase. Excluding this, there is an increase of HUF 41 and HUF 29 for petrol and diesel respectively. The increase of around HUF 70 per liter means that an average 50-liter tank of petrol costs between HUF 3,500 and 4,000 more now than it did in December last year, when prices were already sky-high.
