Bálint Pásztor was elected as the new president of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ) at the general assembly election of officials of the largest Hungarian minority party in Serbia, held in Senta (Zenta), North Bačka on Saturday.

The VMSZ held an extraordinary election because its former president, István Pásztor, who led the party for 16 years, died last October. Summing up the events of the last nine months, acting president Bálint Pásztor pointed out that the party had had an intense period, a serious campaign and a significant electoral success, a result of which the late president would have been proud.

At the general assembly election of officials, Bálint Pásztor was the only candidate for party president. Out of 335 delegates, 333 voted for him and two against. Born in 1979, Bálint Pásztor, who holds a doctorate in law, has served as vice-president of the VMSZ, parliamentary group leader and president of the Municipal Council of Subotica (Szabadka). As party president, he will retain the latter two positions.

After his election, Bálint Pásztor said:

In the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, we will continue to work for the preservation of identity and the creation of livelihoods, supporting all local projects aimed at improving the quality of life of the people.”

He added that he wants to open up to Hungarian intellectuals in Vojvodina who are not affiliated with the VMSZ, and that the VMSZ Presidency will continue to cooperate with the ruling Fidesz-KDNP in Hungary and the Serbian Progressive Party. “Of course, we will do all this as we have done since 2007, by participating in elections on our own, by serving the community on our own, by winning our seats in parliament on our own, and then by seeking allies to implement our program,” he underlined.

At the general assembly election of officials in Senta, members of the party’s 50-member council were elected from among 128 candidates. The party’s 20-member presidency and three vice-presidents will be decided at the next council meeting.

Fact

According to the 2022 census, there are just over 184,000 Hungarians in Serbia, representing 2.77 percent of the population. The Hungarian minority lives in Vojvodina in northern Serbia.
