István Pásztor, Greatest Figure of Vojvodina Hungarians, Passes Away

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.10.31.

István Pásztor, the greatest personality of Hungarians in Vojvodina (Serbia), has died at the age of 67 after a short, serious illness. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said goodbye to him on his social media page, while Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén and János Árpád Potápi, State Secretary for National Policy, paid tribute to the politician’s life’s work in a joint statement on Monday evening.

István Pásztor was the president of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ) and the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, leader of the Hungarian community in Vojvodina, and an important strategic partner and friend of the Hungarian government, they write. He has devoted his entire life to the service of his homeland and his community. Throughout his life and his political career, Pásztor worked for the preservation and strengthening of the Hungarian community in Vojvodina. Thanks to his activity as president of the VMSZ, the Hungarians of Vojvodina have become the best organized Hungarian ethnic group in the Carpathian Basin.

Through his persistent and tenacious work, he made an incomparable contribution not only to the affairs of  Hungarians, but also to the strengthening of Serbian-Hungarian relations by forming a bridge between the two governments, the two countries, and the two nations.

Without István Pásztor’s personal commitment, the series of steps towards mutual reconciliation between Serbia and Hungary would not have been possible and would not have reached an exemplary level in the region,”

the statement reads.

With him, “one of the most charismatic politicians of the Hungarian nation has passed away.” As a leader known for his political acumen, firm stance, and directness, he was guided by his faith in the unity of Hungary “in matters of our national prosperity.”

His tireless commitment to the nation will remain an eternal example for all of us,”

they concluded.

“He has walked the path of the fighters. May God let István Pásztor rest in peace,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote on his Facebook page about the Vojvodina politician. The photo showing him with Pásztor reads, “Farewell, my friend!”.
