LEGO will create 300 new jobs in Nyíregyháza (northeastern Hungary) with an investment of HUF 54 billion (EUR 138 million), and will also expand its solar park and plan a geothermal project, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stressed on Thursday.
The minister said at the announcement of a new investment by the Danish-owned LEGO Manufacturing Kft. that the company will expand its packaging and warehouse capacities to the tune of HUF 54 billion (EUR 138 million) in the period 2023-2025. The development will be supported by the state with HUF 4.3 billion (EUR 11 million).
He emphasized that the toy manufacturer is committed to environmentally friendly operations, and therefore in the future
it will also invest in the expansion of its solar park and the use of geothermal energy, strengthening Hungary’s position among the twenty countries in the world that are able to increase their economic performance while reducing their emissions.
He recalled that last year, despite the difficulties of recent years, employment, investment and exports reached record levels. “What is even more pleasing is that we can say that all three records are likely to be broken this year, despite the fact that we have had to face extreme inflationary pressures throughout the year,” he underlined.
By the end of this year, we will have doubled the highest amount of investment ever recorded. Last year’s record of EUR 6.5 billion will be followed by a record of EUR 13 billion this year,”
he added.

He also praised the “amazing development” of eastern Hungary in recent years. As an example, he mentioned that since 2014, Nyíregyháza has made 18 major investment decisions that have been financially supported by the government.
Péter Szijjártó said that Danish companies play an important role in Hungary, being among the twenty largest investor communities. The value of bilateral trade turnover increased by 16 percent last year, and growth of over 10 percent has been recorded so far this year.

He highlighted that
the performance of the Hungarian plastics industry, thanks in part to LEGO, reached HUF 3,600 billion (EUR 9.2 billion) in 2022, after a 15 percent growth, and the momentum seems to be sustained.
According to the LEGO Group, construction of the new halls will start in 2024, with additional packaging and warehouse space, administrative buildings, and other facilities to add 30,000 square meters of new buildings to the factory. The investment will increase the volume of LEGO sets produced here by almost a third.
The factory expansion also aims to support the LEGO Group’s sustainability efforts to reduce its carbon emissions by 37 percent by 2032.
Part of the energy used will be provided by new solar parks owned by the company, and the possibility of using geothermal heating energy will be explored in the near future.
