After the official part of the visit, Viktor Orbán accepted FIFA’s invitation and watched the Argentina-Croatia world cup football match.

“I like it when cultures meet and play each other in a single sport, according to the same rules,” he told Qatari journalists. The Prime Minister said he was trying to follow the matches from home, but this was sometimes difficult as he had to work during the day, and so he only had time to do so late at night.

Orbán called the world cup exciting and spectacular, saying that he very much appreciated the organization of the event and the fact that Qatar had decided to spend money on hosting the entire world.

According to the Prime Minister, it is important that the event is held in an Arabic country. Regarding the phrase ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do,’ he said it is very good that an Arabic country is hosting the world, who must therefore respect local customs and mentality. He said this was important not only for football but also from the viewpoint of understanding different views of life.

After the game, Orbán traveled to Brussels to attend the first ever summit of the EU and the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). In the afternoon, he will also hold bilateral talks with the leaders of several ASEAN countries.
