More than 1,500 people have already applied to join the police’s border guard regiment, and more than 500 of them have signed contracts with the police and started their four-week training, the National Police Headquarters revealed on Monday.
According to the police, the number of new applications has been steadily increasing, while the fitness checks are ongoing. They added that the 180-hour training sessions – consisting of four curricular units – are ongoing in Bács-Kiskun, Békés, Csongrád-Csanád, Hajdú-Bihar, and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties.
During the training, the border hunters acquire law enforcement, legal, shooting and tactical, border surveillancek and border traffic control skills to enable them to carry out their sworn duties of guarding the state border and preventing illegal migration.
In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced this summer that border hunters would be trained as migration pressure on the southern border intensifies.
The training of the border hunters has already kicked off in several parts of Hungary.
There is a severe need for border hunters as well, since illegal border infringements are on the rise, with thousands of illegal migrants proceeding to cross the border almost every week. Meanwhile, people smugglers are also present and there are more and more serious car crashes involving them and migrants.
