Hungary’s chief medical officer has issued a third-degree heat alert throughout the country, in effect between Wednesday and Saturday midnight.
A third-degree heat alert, the highest level possible, is issued when the median temperature reaches 27 degrees Celsius for three days in a row.
Daytime highs are forecast to reach 40 degrees in the second half of the week, with lows not falling below 20 degrees in certain places.
Young children, the elderly, and those with cardiovascular diseases should take particular precautions, a statement by the national public health center (NNK) and the disaster management authority warns.
The heat alert advises drinking plenty, avoiding the sun between 11 am and 3 pm, and using skin protection.
Budapest offers help against the unbearable heat
The municipal institutions of Budapest are helping locals with drinking fountains, water distribution, intensive air-conditioning of public vehicles, and extended opening hours of beaches.
Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced on Tuesday that he asked public companies to take concrete measures in the capital.
Budapest Public Transport Center (BKK) will distribute drinking water at busy traffic spots including downtown Deák Square, the Keleti Railway Station, and Széll Kálmán Square. The Budapest Water Works has also sent out a vehicle equipped with a tank providing drinking water to pedestrians.
Budapest’s public infrastructure maintenance company will keep sprinkling water onto roads and baths in the city will operate with extended opening hours, Karácsony said on Facebook.
