Hungary’s armed forces are purchasing new short-range missiles based on German technology, a government official has said.
Gáspár Maróth, government commissioner for defense developments, said in a statement that the contract for the IRIS-T air-to-air guided missiles was signed with German weapons maker Diehl on Friday.
The purchase will allow the Hungarian Armed Forces to equip its Gripen fighters with the most advanced air combat technology, Maróth said. Unlike the Sidewinder missiles that have been in use until now, the IRIS-Ts can be used in the most difficult air strike situations even under heavy overload, he added.
Hungary also plans to develop its air force’s BVR and air-to-ground capabilities, the government commissioner said.
