The Parliament’s Committee on Justice has rejected the proposal of compulsory vaccination of MPs, initiated by independent lawmaker János Bencsik. Bencsik’s motion was only supported by fellow independent representative, Erik Fülöp.
In November, the Orbán-led government gave the right to employers to make vaccination compulsory as a condition of further employment. According to the recent decision of the head of the National Assembly’s office, workers in parliament are also obliged to receive the coronavirus vaccine.
However, the decision does not apply to MPs, who are legally not in the employment of parliament.
In response to this controversial situation, a few weeks ago, independent MP János Bencsik submitted a motion to make vaccination compulsory for all members of parliament as well.
“My goal was to take responsibility and lead by example. If a shop assistant or a bus driver can be required to be vaccinated, then so should MPs. I regret that in the end neither the governing party nor any groups of the opposition were willing to make this commitment,” commented János Bencsik the decision.
Although vaccination will not be compulsory, according to the information given by parliamentary groups to the press, all MPs have already been vaccinated.
