The thickness of the parlor candies’ chocolate coating and the weight of the sweets were checked in Hungary in the last few days. During the quality control, hardly any sweets were found that did not pass the test. Not only the classic jelly-filled candies were checked, but also those flavored with marzipan and even pumpkin seed cream.

“The enjoyment value of even the best salon candies can be ruined if the filling overflows into the paper” warns the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, following a quality test. It’s important that consumers get what they pay for according to what is on the packaging. The total weight was under the weight written on the box in one out of twenty Christmas candies, according to a consumer protection investigation ordered by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (ITM).
Among the twenty different treats that were checked, in addition to the classic salon candies made with jelly filling, there were also those filled with marzipan, as well as tiramisu and pumpkin seed cream.
If the filling of the candy is covered with a layer of chocolate that is too thin, the cream can easily leak, resulting in the candy drying out. The correct proportion is therefore set by stricter regulations, with all filled products exceeding the 25 percent limit and dipped products exceeding the 20 percent limit. No parlor candy had to be recalled this year because of insufficient coating, according to the ministry’s statement.
The maximum deviation of the weight of the pre-packaged product is also regulated. The difference in weight regarding packages between 100 and 200 grams cannot exceed 9 percent. During the investigation, one product contained less, therefore in this case an official procedure has begun.
Next time, the consumer protection organization will check the safety of twinkle lights.
