Budapest Christmas Market to be Held Again after Last Year’s Hiatus

Hungary Today 2021.11.12.

Last year, the Budapest Christmas Market was canceled with the aim of inhibiting the spread of the coronavirus. This year, despite the high number of new infections, the Budapest Municipality decided otherwise. The organizers announced that it will only be possible to visit the Christmas Market in Vörösmarty Square from November 19th with a covid immunity card. Foreign tourists are also welcome.

The Christmas market in Vörösmarty Square, organized again this year by the Budapest Municipality, will be visitable only with a Covid immunity card, Csaba Faix, managing director of Budapest Brand Zrt. told InfoRadio on Thursday. The Christmas market will open on November 19th and run for 43 days until December 31st.

To verify Covid immunity certificate cards, a fence will be erected around the site with three entrances (a fourth will be opened on busy days). In addition to the immunity card, a personal identification document will be required at the entrances.

Despite the fourth wave, tourism in Budapest is recovering, so foreign visitors are also expected in Vörösmarty Square. After the ceremonial opening on November 19th, the Advent weekend will be full of surprises, candlelight, and children’s activities. Finnish Santa Claus, Joulupukki, will also visit Vörösmarty Square on December 6th. This year, for the first time, contactless shopping will be introduced in the catering industry to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
