The flame of the 17th Paralympic Games has been lit in Paris, marking the beginning of the biggest sporting event for athletes with disabilities. With 4,400 competitors from 168 delegations, including a strong Hungarian team.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Paralympics took place in an unconventional but vibrant setting, the Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysées. This venue choice emphasized the message of inclusivity, highlighting the need for cities worldwide to be accessible for all. Amid a colorful display titled Paradox, from Discord to Agreement, the Hungarian delegation, led by flag bearer Fanni Illés, was the 66th to march.
Fanni Illés, a world and European champion swimmer, had the honor of carrying the national flag at the opening ceremony. Reflecting on her role, she said,
I am very happy that I was thought of. This task is perhaps more exciting, responsible, and stressful than having to swim the 100m breaststroke twice.”
Despite her recent challenges, including postpartum depression, Illés remains optimistic. “If someone told me two years ago that I could compete in the Paralympics in Paris and that I would be a medal winner, I would not believe it,” she shared. Illés, who was born with a limb handicap, did not set specific goals but is determined to give her best: “it would be nice to finish the race feeling like I have nothing left in me.”
The Hungarian team at the 2024 Paralympics is a formidable force, represented by 39 athletes competing in 13 different sports.
From swimming and kayaking to archery and triathlon, the Hungarian athletes are ready to showcase their skills. The team includes all seven Paralympic champions from Tokyo, such as Luca Ekler and Zsófia Konkoly, and has expanded to include more sports and athletes than in previous years. Notably, more than a quarter of the Hungarian Paralympians in Paris are newcomers, adding fresh energy and potential to the team.
As the 2024 Paralympic Games unfold, Hungary’s athletes are set to inspire with their dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship. With a blend of seasoned champions and eager newcomers, the Hungarian team embodies the spirit of the Paralympics, demonstrating that sport truly brings people together, transcending boundaries and challenges.
