Budapest is set to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its EU accession with a vibrant celebration during the Hello Europe Festival, running from May 1 to 5, in conjunction with the 44th Budapest Spring Festival.

As part of the Hello Europe Festival, a diverse array of activities will take place across the city. Street musicians will entertain and lead dance workshops on Liberty Bridge, while contemporary artists will adorn Béla Bartók Boulevard with captivating installations as part of the Eleven Tavasz project.

The Light Art Museum will illuminate the City Hall’s courtyard with a stunning light installation, complemented by street musicians and DJs at Szent Gellért and Egyetem squares. In the evening, a captivating projection will illuminate the facade of the Great Market Hall. Meanwhile, the Cinema Mystica light art show will breathe new life into the forgotten underpass of Ferenciek Square, and LUGO’s graffiti installation will captivate audiences at Móricz Zsigmond Square.

On May 1, the Town Hall pop-up park will host a nostalgia concert called 20 Hits of 20 Years,

featuring performances by esteemed artists such as Bíborka Bocskor, Freddie, the Heroes, and more. The Budapest Choir will also enchant audiences with Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.”

City Hall Park will serve as a hub for family-friendly entertainment throughout the festival, offering shows, storytelling concerts, dance performances, outdoor games, and craft activities.

The celebration continues with the 44th Budapest Spring Festival (BTF) from April 29 to May 12,

showcasing theater performances, exhibitions, concerts, and special events across the city and beyond, commemorating the 20th anniversary of EU accession.

The accession document was signed by then PM Péter Medgyessy and the Foreign Minister of the Medgyessy administration, László Kovács. An important role in the accession negotiations was played by Minister Kovács’ predecessor, János Martonyi, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Friends of Hungary Foundation (publisher of Hungary Today and Ungarn Heute), recently awarded the Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit.
